RICHMOND- We all remember Michael Jordan’s outstretched arm that pulled off a galactic comeback.

Down 66-18 in the first half, the Bulls legend helped Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes erase the large deficit to pull off a 78-77 upset over the heavily favored Monstars in Space Jam.

Now we see that a modern legend is teaming up with Bugs and the gang in an attempt to rekindle the same magic. Who else? Lebron James of course.

The follow-up: Space Jam 2, is being co-produced by James’ SpringHill Entertainment company and is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2021.

The original film grossed more than $230 million in ticket sales, with more than $140 million raked in overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.

There is no doubt fans will flock to see this movie, particularly Lakers fans and Lebron fans. It should be well noted that movie critics will also be in attendance to either praise the movie or shred it by their critique.

Despite all the glitz and glamour that this is looking to be, any complaints will likely be justified because the sequel is simply not going to be nearly as good as the original.

The situation has occurred with a majority of films, i.e. The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Honey, I blew up the kid.

There are exceptions however to this rule such as Aliens, and The Empire Strikes Back. However, it is safe to say that there really aren’t many which jump right out at you.

One factor could very well be the flat out disdain for the Akron native. Particularly the Cavalier fans whose owner accused James for quitting on the team following a loss to the Boston Celtics in 2010.

Following that loss, members of James’ camp leaked that he had to be “sedated” before three games in the Celtics series.

Then came 2011 with the meltdown vs Dallas before winning over Oklahoma City in 2012 and Ray Allen coming to the rescue the following year against San Antonio. The Spurs got revenge in 2014.

After that, despite coming back from a 3-1 deficit against a 73-9 Golden State Warriors team, the “King” as James is called, was defeated three out of four times in a four year stretch by the Warriors, the last two coming courtesy of Kevin Durant, who lost to James in 2012.

He’s also one of the best players to ever step foot on an NBA court, and there are just some people who have yet to grasp the thought.

In the case of Jordan, except for the fans of the Bad Boy Pistons, there was no real animosity. In addition, a vast majority of NBA stars willingly stepped forward to help Jordan unlike James.

The basketball world has entered a new era. Plus several questions still arise from how the movie could potentially play out.

Will Lebron choose to have all the stars on his team such as his time in Miami when he teamed up with Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade? The Monstars were NBA players themselves against Jordan and the Tunes.

Will Lebron attempt to trade one of his Tunes teammates if they don’t perform? Kids won’t find that entertaining, if at all they watch the Looney Tunes cartoon.

And the biggest question above all…who is going to be the Bill Murray character to Lebron? Some will say Rich Paul or Maverick Carter. Others may turn to Lebron’s friends in the media such as FS1’s Nick Wright or Shannon Sharpe.

Either way, Space Jam 2 is expected to blast off into space with sales, but chances are the fuses will go out before liftoff.
